This policy explains how Self Storage Insurance Australia (SSIA) handles personal information collected through this website, www.ssia.au, and when you contact us. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
In short
- We collect the details you send us by email or in our business insurance application, and some technical information when you visit this website.
- This website uses Google Analytics, which uses cookies, and Ahrefs Web Analytics, which doesn't. You can opt out of Google Analytics.
- We don't use advertising cookies, advertising pixels or remarketing on this website.
- When you get a quote or buy insurance, other organisations also handle your information under their own privacy policies. We explain how this works below.
- You can ask to see or correct your information, or make a complaint, by emailing storesafe@ssia.au.
Who we are
This website is operated by Self Storage Insurance Australia (SSIA). In this policy, "SSIA", "we", "us" and "our" mean Self Storage Insurance Australia.
Self Storage Insurance Australia (SSIA) operates under the authorisation of Connect Business Pty Ltd (ABN 59 612 031 964), Corporate Authorised Representative No. 1241963, an Authorised Representative of Community Broker Network Pty Ltd.
SSIA arranges insurance. We are not an insurer, and we don't issue the policies we arrange.
What this policy covers
This policy covers:
- your visits to this website;
- emails you send us, for example to storesafe@ssia.au;
- the business insurance application on our Apply for business insurance page;
- information about you that we receive from others, such as the issuer or the operator of the SSIA portal, for example updates about your policy or a claim.
It doesn't cover how the SSIA portal at myportal.insure, our licensee, the issuer or insurers handle your information. They have their own privacy policies. See "When you get a quote or buy insurance" below.
The personal information we collect
Personal information is information or an opinion about an identified person, or a person who is reasonably identifiable. The kinds we collect depend on how you deal with us.
When you email us
We collect your name, email address and anything else you include, such as your phone number, your policy number, details about your storage or your facility, and your question or complaint.
When you apply for business insurance
The business insurance application for storage facility owners and operators asks for information such as:
- the name, ABN and email address of the insured (a person or a business), and the names and facility addresses of any additional insureds;
- the facility's address, the period of insurance and the excess you want;
- your claims history;
- details about the facility, such as its construction, number of units, fire protection, security and access hours;
- sums insured, business interruption figures, turnover and the public liability limit you want;
- whether you want tax audit cover, and your tax audit history;
- the name, position and signature of the person completing the form, and the date.
When you visit this website
When your browser loads a page, our hosting provider receives technical information, such as your IP address, your browser and device type, the page you asked for, and the date and time.
If you visit the live website, our analytics tools also collect information about how you use it. See "Cookies and analytics" below.
Information from other people
We may receive information about you from others involved in arranging or managing your insurance, such as our licensee, the issuer, insurers or the portal operator. For example, we may receive updates about your policy or a claim.
We may also receive your details from someone else, for example when a business names you as an additional insured on its application.
Sensitive information
We don't ask for sensitive information, such as health information or criminal records, on this website or in the business insurance application. Please don't send it to us unless we ask for it.
Dealing with us without giving your name
You can browse this website without telling us who you are, and you can ask us a general question without giving your name. To arrange insurance or deal with a policy, we need to know who you are.
How we collect and hold your information
We collect personal information:
- directly from you, when you email us or fill in the business insurance application;
- automatically, through our hosting provider's logs and our analytics tools, when you use this website;
- from the other people described above.
We hold personal information electronically, including in our email system (Microsoft 365) and in the Jotform account that receives business insurance applications. Some of these systems are run by service providers for us.
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes below, or as long as the law requires us to keep records. After that, we take reasonable steps to delete it or de-identify it.
Why we collect, use and share it
We collect, use and share personal information to:
- answer your enquiry and keep a record of it;
- seek quotes from insurers and arrange insurance for your business;
- help you with a policy, a claim or a complaint;
- send you, or arrange for you to receive, service messages about your policy, such as a reminder before it expires;
- run this website, keep it secure and understand how it is used, so we can improve it;
- meet our legal and regulatory obligations, including those that apply to financial services.
If you don't give us the information we ask for, we may not be able to answer your enquiry or arrange the cover you want.
We use and share your information for another purpose only if you agree, if you would reasonably expect it and it is related to the purpose we collected it for, or if the law requires or allows it.
Who we share it with
Depending on why you contact us, we may share your personal information with:
- Community Broker Network Pty Ltd, our licensee, and Connect Business Pty Ltd, under whose authorisation we operate;
- insurers and underwriting agencies, to get quotes and arrange cover;
- the issuer of SSIA Storage Insurance and the operator of the SSIA portal, when you have a policy or a claim;
- service providers who help us run this website and our business, such as our website developer, our hosting provider (Vercel), our form provider (Jotform), our email provider (Microsoft) and our analytics providers (Google and Ahrefs);
- the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA), regulators and others, where the law requires or allows it;
- anyone you ask us to share it with.
Cookies and analytics
Cookies in brief
A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. Apart from the Google Analytics cookies described below, this website doesn't set cookies. Google Analytics sets them on the live website only, to help us understand how people use the site. Ahrefs Web Analytics doesn't use cookies.
We don't use advertising cookies, advertising pixels or remarketing. You can turn off Google Analytics using the options below, and the website works the same without it.
The business insurance application runs on Jotform's service, which may use its own cookies. See "The business insurance application (Jotform)" below.
Hosting and server logs
This website is hosted by Vercel Inc., which is based in the United States. Vercel collects information about requests to the website, such as your IP address, your approximate location worked out from it, your browser and device settings, the page requested and the date and time. Vercel keeps these logs for a limited time. They help keep the website running and secure.
Our fonts are stored on this website, so loading a page doesn't send your details to a font provider.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4, provided by Google LLC, on the live website only. It works by adding code from Google to our pages, which collects information about how you use the website.
What it collects. Google Analytics collects information about your visit, such as the pages you view, how far you scroll, the site you came from, your approximate location, your device and browser, links you click to other websites, and files you download, such as the Product Disclosure Statement. Your browser sends your IP address to Google when the code loads. Google says Google Analytics doesn't log or store IP addresses.
Cookies. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (cookies stored under this website's address) called _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID. They tell one visitor apart from another and remember your current session. By default they last up to 2 years. Google says some browsers delete them sooner if you don't visit the website again.
How we have set it up.
- Google signals (a feature that adds information Google holds about people signed in to their Google accounts) and ad personalisation are turned off, so we don't use Google Analytics for advertising.
- We don't send your name, email address or other details that identify you to Google, and we don't put personal information in web addresses.
- Our Google Analytics can't see what you type into the SSIA portal or the business insurance application, because they run on other websites.
- Detailed analytics data is kept for 14 months. This setting doesn't affect summary reports.
Google explains how it uses this information on its page about how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
How to opt out.
- Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, which stops Google Analytics measuring your visits to any website.
- Use your browser's settings to block or delete cookies.
- Use a browser extension that blocks analytics scripts.
Ahrefs Web Analytics
We use Ahrefs Web Analytics, provided by Ahrefs Pte Ltd of Singapore, on the live website only. It works by adding code from Ahrefs to our pages, which collects information about how you use the website. Ahrefs says it doesn't use cookies, collect personal data or store personally identifiable information by default.
It records the pages you view, the site you came from, the links you click (including email links), your browser, device and operating system, your screen size and your browser's language settings. It uses your IP address to work out your approximate location, no more precisely than your city. Ahrefs says it then discards the full IP address and never stores it. To count visits, Ahrefs uses a code that is reset every day, which Ahrefs says stops it tracking a visitor beyond a single day.
Ahrefs says Ahrefs Web Analytics doesn't use cookies, so there are no Ahrefs cookies to delete. A browser extension that blocks analytics scripts will stop it loading.
Search tools
We use Google Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. They don't run on your device and don't put cookies or scripts on this website.
- Google Search Console gives us summary data about how this website appears in Google Search, such as the search terms that showed it, clicks, impressions, average position, and the countries and devices people used.
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools checks this website for technical problems by visiting its pages, and reports on links and search terms that lead to it.
Links, the portal and embedded forms
Some parts of this website take you to services run by other organisations.
The SSIA portal
The "Get A Quote (Goods in Storage)", "Login" and facility approval links open the SSIA portal at myportal.insure, operated by a third-party insurance platform provider. The portal collects the information needed for quotes, policies, your account and facility approval applications. Any privacy information shown in the portal applies when you use it.
The business insurance application (Jotform)
Our Apply for business insurance page shows a form provided by Jotform Inc. inside a frame, or on Jotform's website if you use the link to open it in a new tab. Either way, the form runs on Jotform's service, not on this website. What you enter is sent to Jotform and is then available to us. Jotform may use its own cookies in the form, and its cookie policy explains them.
Jotform Inc. is based in the United States. Jotform says form data is stored on servers in the United States unless its customer chooses to store it in the European Union. The form we use stores data in the United States or the European Union. See Jotform's privacy policy.
Other websites
This website links to other websites, such as those of our licensee, the issuer, AFCA and industry bodies. We don't control them and aren't responsible for their privacy practices. Please read their privacy policies.
When you get a quote or buy insurance
When you apply for or buy insurance, your information is also handled by the organisations involved in arranging and providing your cover, under their own privacy policies.
- SSIA Storage Insurance (Goods in Storage). You get a quote and buy cover through the SSIA portal. The portal operator and the issuer of SSIA Storage Insurance, named in the footer of every page, handle your information. The issuer's AU Privacy Policy (PDF, opens in a new tab), also linked in the footer, explains how it handles your information, including when it is sent overseas.
- Business insurance, Goods in Transit, Marine Transport and workers' compensation. We pass the information you give us to insurers, and in some cases underwriting agencies, to get quotes and arrange cover. Each insurer handles your information under its own privacy policy, which is available from the insurer.
- Our licensee. The Privacy Policy of Community Broker Network, our licensee, is also linked in the footer of every page. It explains how the licensee handles personal information.
Overseas disclosure
Some of the organisations we share personal information with are located overseas, or store information overseas. They are:
- Google, for Google Analytics: Google LLC is based in the United States. Google lists the countries where it has data centres on its data centre locations page, and Google says your information may be processed on servers outside the country where you live;
- Ahrefs, for Ahrefs Web Analytics: Ahrefs Pte Ltd is based in Singapore, and its privacy policy says the personal data it collects is stored in the United States;
- Vercel, our hosting provider: the United States and other countries in Vercel's network;
- Jotform, our form provider: the United States or the European Union;
- Microsoft, our email provider (Microsoft 365): Microsoft may store or process information in Australia or other countries;
- the SSIA portal: its provider may store information in Australia or other countries;
- insurers we approach for business, transit, marine or workers' compensation cover: these can include insurers and underwriters outside Australia, such as Lloyd's syndicates in the United Kingdom.
Before we disclose personal information to someone overseas, we take reasonable steps to make sure they handle it in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.
Direct marketing
We don't send marketing emails unless you have asked us to. We won't add you to a mailing list just because you asked for a quote, applied for insurance or sent us an enquiry. Service messages about a policy you hold, such as a reminder before it expires, are not marketing emails.
If you do ask us to send you information, every email will identify Self Storage Insurance Australia (SSIA), say how to contact us, and include an easy way to unsubscribe. You can also opt out at any time by emailing storesafe@ssia.au. We will act on your request within 5 working days.
Automated decisions
This website doesn't use computer programs to make decisions about you using your personal information, and it doesn't decide whether insurance is offered or on what terms.
When you ask for a quote in the SSIA portal, the portal uses the information you enter to work out the quote. If you have a question about how a quote or a decision about your cover was made, email storesafe@ssia.au.
How we protect your information
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, change or disclosure. For example:
- this website uses an encrypted (HTTPS) connection;
- access to enquiries and applications is limited to people who need it;
- we use service providers that have their own security safeguards;
- we don't put personal information in web addresses, and we don't send your name or contact details to our analytics tools;
- we delete or de-identify personal information when we no longer need it.
No way of sending information over the internet is completely secure, and ordinary email is not encrypted from end to end. Please think about what you include in an email.
If a data breach is likely to cause someone serious harm, we will act quickly to contain it, and we will tell the people affected and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.
Accessing and correcting your information
You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading. Email storesafe@ssia.au.
- We will need to confirm who you are before we act on your request.
- We aim to respond within 30 days.
- We don't charge you for making a request or for correcting your information. If giving you access would involve significant cost, we may charge a reasonable fee, and we will tell you first.
- If we refuse your request, we will tell you why in writing, unless that would be unreasonable, and tell you how to complain.
- If we don't agree to correct your information, you can ask us to attach a statement saying you believe it is wrong, and we will take reasonable steps to do so.
If your information is held by the issuer, an insurer, the portal operator or our licensee, you can also ask them directly.
Making a privacy complaint
If you think we have mishandled your personal information, please tell us first, so we can try to put it right.
- Email storesafe@ssia.au with your name, your contact details and what happened.
- We will acknowledge your complaint within 5 business days.
- We will look into it and give you our response within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, or we haven't responded within 30 days, you can contact:
- The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). If your complaint relates to the insurance services we arrange, you may be able to take it to AFCA: www.afca.org.au, 1800 931 678 (free call), info@afca.org.au, GPO Box 3, Melbourne VIC 3001.
- The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). You can lodge a privacy complaint online at www.oaic.gov.au, call 1300 363 992, or write to GPO Box 5288, Sydney NSW 2001.
For complaints about an insurance policy or a claim, see Complaints and support.

We may update this policy, for example when we change how this website works, add a new tool or the law changes. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated. We will update this policy before we start using any new analytics, advertising or tracking tool on this website.
